London: An estimated 4.3 million people in private homes in the UK had Covid-19 last week, up from 3.7 million in the previous week. This information has been received in the data of the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The spread of the virus continues to be highest in England, where nearly one in 15 people are estimated to have the virus in the week to January 6, according to ONS data published on Wednesday.

In Wales, one in 20 people are estimated to have contracted the disease last week, Xinhua news agency quoted the ONS as saying.

The latest estimate for Scotland is one in 20, or 297,400 people, above 238,000. In Northern Ireland, the estimate is 99,200 people, up from 72,900 in a week.

The ONS said, “Covid-19 infections continued to increase in the East of England and all areas of England except London.”

According to official figures, Britain recorded 129,587 COVID-19 cases in the last 24-hour period, taking the total number of infected in the country to 14,956,864.

The country also reported 398 more deaths, taking the tally to 151,493.

According to the latest figures, over 90 per cent of people aged 12 and over in the UK have received their first dose of vaccine and more than 83 per cent are fully vaccinated.

More than 62 percent have received a booster dose.
