New Delhi: The budget session of Parliament will run from January 31 to April 8, with the first half being followed by a holiday of about a month. The Union Budget will be presented on February 1 and the President will address the joint sitting of both the houses.

Sources said that the session has been divided into two parts, in which the budget session will start from January 31 and will run till February 11, while the second session of the budget session will run from March 14 to April 8. According to sources, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha will sit at different times. Those who will participate in the Parliament session, they will have to bring their vaccination certificate as well as RT-PCR report. The first session will end before the start of voting, while the second part of the budget session is starting after the results are declared.

The schedule has been announced amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and the session will coincide with elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand. The last five Parliament sessions were called off due to the pandemic.

Officials said they are exploring options such as timetables and seating arrangements for the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, which take care of social distancing during the budget session.

An official said, “We are looking at various options. But the final decision will depend on the situation of COVID by the end of this month. The meeting of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha will be held around January 25 or 26 to decide how to conduct the session.

The official said it was not clear whether the session would face any shortfall amid a spurt in COVID-19 cases, as several MPs, prominent leaders and officials of both houses have contracted the disease.

A second official said elections in the five states is another important factor, which could result in the session being cut short.
