New Delhi: World Championship bronze medalist Lakshya Sen advanced to the final of the Yonex-Sunrise India Open badminton tournament on Saturday. Sen defeated Ng Tje Yong of Malaysia 19-21, 21-16, 21-12 in the semifinals to reach the finals of his first World Tour Super 500 tournament.

The 20-year-old from Uttarakhand defeated world ranking 60th-ranked Yong 19-21 21-16 21-12 in a close match of the men’s singles semi-final. He will now face third seed Lakshya in the final on Sunday with world champion Loh Keen Yew of Singapore.

Sen, who won a bronze medal at the BWF World Championships in December during the first game, made a 4-4 comeback at a level below 1-4, then extended his lead to 10-7.

Yong then struggled into the game with a level score of 14–14 and Sen then held on to his opponent at 17-all, with the Malaysian Indian shuttler winning his first game.

The second game started with a bit of a flurry as Sen made a slight change in the game and went on to win the game 21-16.

Yang’s return to the game came after two players left after the doubles pair was infected with COVID-19.

“I think we both played well and I am looking forward to the match on Sunday,” Sen said after his win.
