India Open Badminton: Seven players found to be COVID positive withdrew

New Delhi: The India Open badminton tournament has also been affected by the corona epidemic and seven Indian players withdrew after coming under the grip of corona infection.

The World Badminton Federation said in a statement, ‘These players have been found positive in the mandatory RT-PCR test conducted on Tuesday. The doubles partners of these seven players also withdrew due to close contact.

It said, ‘No one else will be included in place of these players in the main draw. Their opponents will get a walkover.

The BWF disclosed this in the early hours but did not reveal the names of the players.

According to news agency PTI, N. Sikki Reddy, Dhruv Kapila, Gayatri Gopichand, Akshan Shetty and Kavya Gupta have also been ousted from the competition after coming in close contact with the infected. However, he has not got the test of COVID-19 done.

Sikki has partnered with Ashwini in the women’s doubles, Dhruv has played mixed doubles with Sikki, Akshan along with Simran formed the mixed doubles team, while Kavya and Khushi are the women’s doubles partners.

Earlier in the 2019 World Championships bronze medalist B Sai Praneeth, double specialists Manu Attri and Dhruv Rawat underwent a COVID test before leaving for the national capital and were ruled out before the tournament began.

The entire England badminton contingent also withdrew ahead of the Super 500 event after the country’s doubles specialist San Wendy and coach Nathan Robertson tested positive for COVID-19.

Organized by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), the India Open Badminton Tournament 2022 is being held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall of the Indira Gandhi Stadium.

As per the COVID-19 protocol, all the participating players are being tested daily outside the hotel and stadium.

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, World Championships silver and bronze medalists Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen, London Games bronze medalist Saina Nehwal are among the Indian players who have reached the second round of the tournament.

Top international stars include world champion Loh Keen Yew, three-time men’s doubles world champion Mohamed Ahsan and Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan competing in the tournament, held for the first time in three years after the previous two tournaments were canceled due to the pandemic. He is going.

It is to be known that 27,561 cases of COVID-19 were registered in Delhi on Wednesday and 40 people died due to this virus. This is the second time such a large number of cases were registered in Delhi after the start of the COVID-19 epidemic.
