New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday greeted soldiers, ex-servicemen and their families on the occasion of Army Day. Acknowledging the bravery and professionalism displayed by the Indian Army, PM Modi said that words cannot do justice to their invaluable contribution to national security.

PM Modi tweeted, “Greetings on the occasion of Army Day, especially our courageous soldiers, respected veterans and their families. The Indian Army is known for its bravery and professionalism. Words cannot do justice to the invaluable contribution of the Indian Army towards national security.

India celebrates Army Day every year on 15 January to acknowledge the importance of the Indian Army and honor the sacrifices of the soldiers. On this day in 1949, Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa took over as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.

The Prime Minister wrote on Twitter, “Indian Army personnel serve in hostile areas and are at the forefront of helping fellow citizens during humanitarian crisis including natural calamities. India is proud of the outstanding contribution of the Army in peacekeeping operations abroad as well.

During his speech on the eve of Army Day, Naravane said, “We are determined to counter any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo on our borders. Our response to such efforts is swift, calibrated and decisive. As seen at the time of demand of the situation.”

Naravane’s remarks came amid a month-long border standoff with China following violent clashes in the Pangong Lake area in May 2020. India and China have held 14 rounds of military-level talks to resolve the standoff.
