Lucknow: Indian shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the second round after winning the first round at the Syed Modi International 2022 women’s singles at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday. The two-time Olympic medalist defeated 18-year-old shuttler Tanya Hemant 21-9, 21-9 in a 27-minute match.
At the start of the match, both the players tied 5-5 in the first leg. However, Sindhu snatched the momentum with nine points in a row and then went on to win the game in 14 minutes. After that, maintaining his dominance over Hemant, won the match in straight games.
Former world champion Sindhu will next take on Lauren Lam of America in the 16th round.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s Supanida Katethong, who defeated Sindhu in the semi-finals of the India Open, defeated Srikrishna Priya Kudaravalli of India 21-13, 21-13 in 31 minutes.
Both Sindhu and Katethong have been placed in the same side of the draw and are expected to meet in the quarter-finals.
In another match of the day, fifth seed Evgenia Kosetskaya of the Badminton Federation of Russia defeated Vaidehi Chowdhury 21-16, 21-10 in a 28-minute clash.
Earlier, HS Prannoy, Akarshi Kashyap and MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila were the top Indian pair to reach the second round on Tuesday.
The final of the tournament will be played on 23 January.
