Wardha: The Wardha Police on Wednesday arrested Kalicharan Maharaj in connection with a case registered here for allegedly making derogatory statements against Mahatma Gandhi.
Police Sub-Divisional Officer Piyush Jagtap said that Kalicharan was brought here from Raipur in Chhattisgarh at around 5 am. In a similar case, he was kept in the jail of Raipur.
Kalicharan Maharaj was produced in the court of the local magistrate of Wardha who sent him to judicial custody. A case was registered at Wardha city police station on December 29, 2021.
According to the Indian Express, on the complaint of Congress leader Manoj Chandurkar, an FIR was registered against Kalicharan at Wardha City Police Station under sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot) and 505(2) (public mischief).
It may be noted that cases have also been registered against Kalicharan in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra for his alleged derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi during an event in Raipur on December 26 last year. Kalicharan was arrested on December 30 by the Chhattisgarh Police from Madhya Pradesh in that case.
After the case was registered against him in Raipur, Kalicharan had justified his comments by releasing a video and said that he has no remorse for it.
The Pune Police had arrested Kalicharan Maharaj last week for allegedly making inflammatory speeches during the ‘Shiv Pratap Din’ held there on December 19, 2021. This event was celebrated in the memory of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj killing Afzal Khan in 1659.
The Pune Police had registered a case against Kalicharan, right-wing leader Milind Ekbote, Captain Digendra Kumar (retd) and others for allegedly making inflammatory speeches and hurting religious sentiments during the event.
A Pune court had granted bail to Kalicharan Maharaj on January 7, after which he was sent to Raipur jail.
Wardha police arrested him from Raipur on Wednesday by submitting a production warrant.
