In this match Persebaya Surabaya defeated Arema FC 3-2. During this the entire stadium was packed with spectators. According to the local police, around 42,000 spectators in the stadium started shouting as soon as Arema FC lost. Soon after seeing Arema’s defeat angered by her fans tried to enter the playing field. When the police stopped them from entering the ground, they turned violent and started throwing bottles and other items at the players and football officials. In such a situation, violence spread outside the stadium.
Hundreds of spectators ran towards an exit gate
Then on seeing the violent mob attacked the police. Five police vehicles were torched by the mob. Along with this, in the areas around the stadium, the furious mob also vandalized and arson. In such a situation, the police fired tear gas shells and used force to bring the situation under control. Police then tried to force fans back into the stands, who were banned by FIFA from entering football stadiums. This spread panic. In such a situation, hundreds of spectators ran towards an exit gate to avoid tear gas, which created a stampede. In the stampede, 34 people were crushed to death on the spot. Hundreds of people were injured there.
At least 17 children have died
At the same time, National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that the death toll in this accident was not 174 but 125, while more than 320 people were injured. More than 100 people are undergoing intensive treatment in eight hospitals, out of which 11 are in critical condition. The special thing is that 17 children have also died in this incident.
