Demonstrations taking place in Nepal
The demand for monarchy and Hindu nation has again intensified in Nepal. For this, massive protests took place in the capital Kathmandu on Thursday. The situation became so out of control that the police had to use batons and tear gas to control the crowd, in which both the police and the protesters suffered minor injuries.
‘We want a monarchy, not a republic’
Thousands of protesters gathered demanding the return of the monarchy that was abolished in 2008 and the restoration of Nepal’s status as a Hindu nation. It is being said that a large number of these were supporters of former King Gyanendra of Nepal. They were also continuously raising slogans in favor of Gyanendra during the demonstration. He said that the king is more important than life for us and we do not want a republic but a monarchy.
The protesters allege that Nepal’s government, political parties and the entire administrative staff have become corrupt. He also believes that this is why this failed governance system needs to be uprooted.
Gyanendra had to lose power in 2006!
How times have changed, you can see that in the year 2006, the same King Gyanendra Veer Vikram Shah Dev was in power when there were massive protests against him on the streets for several weeks. The then King Gyanendra was forced to abdicate his rule and implement democracy. Two years later, a newly elected parliament voted to abolish the monarchy and Nepal was declared a republic.
The meaning of Republic was that the head of the country would be the President, not the King. Later, Nepal was declared secular instead of a Hindu nation. This was done with the help of an interim constitution.
